      History

The history of the place dates back to 1983, when architect O. Kalandarishvilis concrete waves, which remained the only component of a large-scale architectural project that was not completed in the 1980s, were turned into a parade ground by the Soviet government. From that time on, the people’s name-calling “Andropov’s Ears” (Yuri Andropov, a Soviet politician and secretary general of the NSC) remained where the tribune was held. In the same square was the hotel “Iveria” – the best hotel in Georgia. As a result of the dismantling of the building in 2005, the Republic Square was renamed the Rose Revolution Square to commemorate the events of November 2003, and on May 25, 2018, to mark the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Georgia, the square was called the First Republic Square
